now. he's got to say to the american people what the president obama legacy may well be in years to come. and for that, you need to have a vision. i'm not sure most people in america are fully clear what that vision is. because we can't keep being a slightly negative, well, you know, things have been really bad, we're trying to make them a bit better. it's going to be a little more oomph about it, positivity and grand vision. >> i would go back to the famous caesar chavez line, yes, we can, and really inject a lot of optimism in this inaugural. the burden on the president is that in 2008, it was electric here in washington. a million people coming, our first african-american president. this time around, it's a little more humdrum. we're exhausted from the 2012 presidential election. newtown has all of us in a tizzy and angry. we've got the, you know, problems going on with fiscal cliff and a new debt crisis. so the mood is not great. the way to change it is a big, bold speech. i personally would like to see the president vote gun control, which i know you've been so helpfully out

of remaking america. >> that's how it all began for president obama. four years later, he's poised to take the oath again. but what will his second term look like? joining me now is margaret hoover and democratic strategist jamal sterns. marvin, let me start with you. obviously heavy heart, watching a democratic president about to make his second inaugural speech, but what has he got on his plate, the president, which he needs to deal with in the second term? >> not too heavy a heart, i will say. republicans want to win, but in a day of the inauguration you can be happy for the president and the country. >> i don't believe that. >> i actually am. there are plenty of us that are perfectly patriotic. he has a very big plate, a huge agenda he wants to get through and the reality of a divided congress. republicans realize they are one half of one third of the federal government and they're trying to get their expectations in check in terms of what they can do, specifically on the debt ceiling, for example. we just heard the house republicans are going to try to negotiate a short-term debt ceil

up the second term, chuck. >> four years ago, enormous expectations for president obama. there were a lot of people, hope and change was big. this time, call it pragmatic hope as far as the public is concerned. as you see here, just less than 30% believe they're going to evaluate president obama with a clean fresh slate. 64% will evaluate him based on past feelings. and here, a continuation of a trend we saw throughout the first term. very similar to what ronald reagan dealt with during his eight years. personally, the public really likes president obama. 74%. but his policies, again, more people disapprove of the policies. 49%, than approve of them there, at 47%. so what about the next four years? sort of a mixed optimism, if you will. i go back to the idea of pragmatic hope. 43% optimistic. 43% pessimistic. 22% kind of mixed. and staying with the theme of word clouds, david, we asked folks to send a message to president obama. what would they like to say for his second term? and as you can see here, look at the most popular phrases. a lot of them have to do with the economy. fix t

on record, 7 degrees. there will be differences between the obama 2009 and 2013. four years ago, the crowd estimate was nearly 2 million people. there is a big parlor game about whether the crowd estimates on the mall are ever accurate. but nearly 2 million. now they are saying between 600- to 800,000. and there are a series of other things. and the money. four years ago, the obama administration, the obama campaign raised $53 million for the inaugural with personal contributions, all capped at $50,000 or less and there was disdain expressed by the administration about taking corporate money, et cetera. all of those conditions have been lifted. they are taking corporate monet and $50,000 cap has been lifted and it's smaller. they don't expect to raise $53 million, making it easier to raise, they are saying between $40 to $50. so there is a smaller nature. that's historically consistent. inaugural speeches tend to be over hyped and anti-climactic, and the second one, even more so. >> thanks. >> a look back at the president's first term and a look ahead, when we come back. >> this is fox new

that barack obama is self-confident and you see a seemingly different president to d today than we saw a year or two ago when we went through the debt nonsense in the middle of 2011. i think that he feels much more able to pull the strings and know what the power is and isn't. he's been scandal-free, and in part, that comes from the top. no disrespect to any of the presidents who got into problems bu but he sets a standard that people know the line they have to tow and they know it and that is why the administration has done well, and he will have the republicans at him and that is going to keep him from the overreach from the republicans. >> and history is what the president has to worry about, because this is almost like deja vu all over again and it takes the scandal out of f the scandal out of it, but the fog of war and what may happen, and what the president has to be cognizant of and not just the presidents that you mentioned, but lyndon baines johnson and other presidents that in the second term things happen o outside of their reach, and he needs to be cognizant of history. >> thank
